We believe you should understand what you are paying for when using a business energy broker. This page explains our usual payment arrangements and the information we provide before you commit.
1. Our role as your energy broker
Save Energy Cost Ltd is a business energy broker and consultancy. We help businesses compare available gas and electricity offers and arrange their chosen contracts.
Your energy supply contract is with your chosen supplier. We are paid for the brokerage or consultancy services we agree to provide.
The services included in your arrangement will be explained before you proceed. These may include comparing offers, explaining contract options, arranging your chosen contract and providing agreed support.
2. How supplier commission works
We are normally paid commission by the energy supplier when we arrange a contract. The supplier may recover this cost through the rates or charges you pay.
A common arrangement is an amount included in your unit rate for each kilowatt-hour of energy you use. This is sometimes called a commission uplift and is expressed in pence per kilowatt-hour (p/kWh).
Included in your price does not mean free
Where commission is included in your energy rates or charges, you pay for our service indirectly through your supplier bill, even if we do not send you a separate invoice.
Some arrangements may use a fixed payment, a standing-charge component or another calculation method. We will explain the arrangement that applies to your proposed contract.
When the supplier pays us may differ from when you pay your energy bills. For example, the supplier may pay commission in advance or in instalments.
3. What we tell you before you agree
Before you commit to an energy contract, we will provide written information explaining:
- The services we will provide and any relevant limits to those services.
- Who pays our commission or fee and how the cost is passed on to you.
- The commission amount or calculation method applicable to your proposed contract.
- For a consumption-based uplift, the amount in p/kWh and the estimated total commission over the contract term.
- The consumption figures, contract duration and other assumptions used in that estimate.
- Any fixed commission, standing-charge component or other relevant remuneration.
- Any separate fee, applicable VAT, payment terms and circumstances in which additional charges could arise.
We will explain whether commission is already included in the prices shown so you can avoid counting it twice.
Please read this information alongside the supplier’s principal terms and ask us about anything that is unclear before accepting.
This page provides a general explanation. It does not replace the commission disclosure for your particular contract.
4. An example of consumption-based commission
The following figures are illustrative only. They are not a quote or a statement of our standard commission rate.
| Item | Example |
|---|---|
| Estimated annual consumption | 30,000 kWh |
| Commission included in the unit rate | 0.5p per kWh (£0.005 per kWh) |
| Estimated annual commission | 30,000 × £0.005 = £150 |
| Contract duration | 3 years |
| Estimated total commission | £150 × 3 = £450 |
This example assumes the same consumption each year and no other commission components. It excludes any applicable VAT.
If the quoted unit rate already includes the 0.5p/kWh commission, you would not add it again when calculating your energy costs.
Actual consumption-based commission may be higher or lower if your usage differs from the estimate.
5. Separate fees and additional services
You will not owe us a separate brokerage or consultancy fee unless we have explained it and agreed it with you in writing beforehand.
If we propose a separate fee, we will explain:
- What service the fee covers.
- The amount or how it will be calculated.
- Whether VAT is applicable.
- When payment becomes due.
- Whether we will also receive supplier commission for the same arrangement.
- Any agreed cancellation or termination charges and the circumstances in which they apply.
If both supplier commission and a separate fee apply, we will explain both before you proceed.
6. Our supplier panel and recommendations
We compare offers from the suppliers available through our commercial arrangements. We do not claim to compare every supplier or every tariff in the market.
You can ask which suppliers we can access and which were considered for your comparison. Availability may depend on your business, location, usage, credit position and contract requirements.
Commission can vary between suppliers and contracts. This can create a potential commercial conflict of interest.
We will explain the basis of any recommendation, including relevant price, contract duration, terms and service considerations. Where a relevant incentive or commercial arrangement could affect the comparison or recommendation, we will explain it before you decide.
We do not guarantee the lowest price available anywhere or that using our service will always produce a saving.
7. Other payments and incentives
Where relevant to your arrangement, we will disclose other payments or benefits we expect to receive in connection with your contract. These may include referral payments, bonuses or other commercial incentives.
If another intermediary is involved, we will explain their role and any relevant remuneration arrangements known to us, including whether payments form part of the disclosed total or create an additional cost.
We will not describe a payment arrangement as cost-free simply because a supplier or another intermediary pays us directly.
8. Renewals and changes to your contract
If we help arrange a renewal or a new contract, we will explain the remuneration for that arrangement before you commit.
Do not assume that the commission rate or payment method will be the same as your previous contract.
Signing a Letter of Authority or requesting a comparison does not, by itself, authorise us to enter into a supply contract on your behalf.
Any separate obligation to reimburse commission following cancellation, termination or another event must have been clearly explained and validly agreed beforehand. Please see our Terms & Conditions and any specific agreement you have accepted.
9. Ask about your commission disclosure
You can ask us for a copy or explanation of the commission information relating to a contract we have arranged for you.
Please include your business name, supply address and the supplier or contract concerned. We may need to confirm your identity and authority before sharing account information.
